Operation Holiday Cheer took place at Van Buren Park Apartments on Chicago’s near west side where parents picked out free toys and their children and spent some socially distanced time with Santa. Related provided toys to every resident under 12 and gift cards to each teen.
“In what has been a challenging year for us all, this was an exciting effort to do something special for our residents,” said Curt Bailey, President of Related Midwest. “Though the holidays may look and feel a lot different this year, there was a little more joy at Van Buren Park Apartments today.”
Van Buren Park Apartments, located on Chicago’s near west side just a few blocks from United Center, is part of Related Midwest’s portfolio of affording housing communities throughout Chicago and the Midwest. Related purchased the property in 2013, ensuring that the apartments remain affordable for another 30 years. Related conducted a significant renovation that included new apartment interiors, upgraded common area amenities including a new fitness center, new building systems and the creation of a community center. Van Buren Park Apartments includes 300 residences for both seniors and families.
“I was proud to help distribute toys to some of our youngest residents of the 27th Ward today,” said Alderman Walter Burnett (27). “We always need strong partners in the community and especially during times like these.”
“Giving is what the holiday season is all about,” said Illinois Senator Patricia Van Pelt. “I am grateful that there are over 100 children in my district who have a little something extra this year thanks to the efforts of Related.”
Toys were hand selected by Related based on the age and number of children in each household. A wide range of both fun and educational toys were provided including scooters, lego sets, dolls, remote control cars and Visa gift cards for the property’s teenagers.
To protect the health of all participants and volunteers, the toy giveaway was conducted with strict adherence to city and state COVID-19 protocols.
