This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re spotlighting Victor Martinez, who has worked with LR Contracting since 1991 as part of its Quality First carpentry division. We asked Victor about his career journey and what has kept him at LR Contracting for over three decades.
Why did you decide to become a carpenter?
When I look back on my career journey, I feel like it was all about me taking the opportunities that came my way. I moved to Chicago from Mexico when I was 17, and for a while, I had a hard time finding a well-paying job. I started working in a factory and my friend offered me work on the weekends on some construction projects he was involved in. I soon realized that working in the trades not only gave me more money, but it also was much more rewarding. Pretty early on in my career, I started working with LR Contracting, and they kept training me to learn more and more parts of carpentry. I learned how to do drywall, framing, doors, trim, crown molding and how to construct cabinets. These opportunities to learn and grow made me want to stick with the company.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I’ve been with the company for three decades, and I still look forward to going to work every day because I’m passionate about what I do. LR Contracting has allowed me to support my family and send my children to college. When I get home from work, I feel happy about what I’ve accomplished, whether it was building a door or putting up crown molding in a new apartment building. I also love working with my team and helping the younger employees learn the trade.
What has been your favorite project to work on over the past three decades?
I’ve truly found something that I like doing on every project I work on, but one that sticks out to me is the Park Tower skyscraper in the Magnificent Mile area. That building was really unique, and it was fun to work on so many different types of carpentry within one project. The first floors of the building are a hotel, and the top of it has apartments with a lot of distinct features that required a variety of carpentry skills to construct. The building was also really high-end, and I liked that everything was expected to be perfect. I worked really hard on this building and was really proud of the finished product.
How do you think your Hispanic heritage plays a role in your work?
I never thought that I’d stay in the United States this long, but I really love my work and the life that I’ve built here. I like that when I show up on the job site, I get to know people from all different backgrounds and they get to know me. Wherever we come from, at the end of the day, we are all working toward the same goal as a team.

¿Por qué decidió ser carpintero?
Cuando miro hacia atrás en mi recorrido profesional, creo que todo se trataba de aprovechar las oportunidades que se me presentaron. Me mudé a Chicago desde México cuando tenía 17 años y, durante un tiempo me costó encontrar un trabajo bien pagado. Empecé a trabajar en una fábrica y mi amigo me ofreció trabajar los fines de semana en algunos proyectos de construcción en los que él estaba involucrado. Pronto me di cuenta que trabajar en la construcción no solo me daba más dinero, sino que también era mucho más gratificante. Al principio en mi carrera, comencé a trabajar con LR Contracting y siguieron entrenándome para aprender más y más sobre la carpintería. Aprendí a hacer paneles de yeso, marcos, puertas, molduras, molduras de corona y a construir gabinetes. Estas oportunidades de aprender y crecer hicieron que yo quisiera seguir con la empresa.
¿Cuál es la parte más gratificante de su trabajo?
He estado con la empresa durante más de tres décadas y todavía deseo ir a trabajar todos los días porque me apasiona lo que hago. LR Contracting me ha permitido mantener a mi familia y enviar a mis hijos a la universidad. Cuando llego a casa del trabajo, me siento feliz por lo que he logrado, ya sea construir una puerta o poner molduras de corona en un nuevo edificio de apartamentos. También me encanta trabajar con mi equipo y ayudar a los empleados más jóvenes a aprender sobre este oficio.
¿Cuál ha sido su proyecto favorito en el que ha trabajado durante las últimas tres décadas?
Realmente encuentro algo que me gusta hacer en cada proyecto en el que trabajo, pero uno que resalta para mi es el rascacielos Park Tower en el área Magnificent Mile. Ese edificio era verdaderamente único, y fue divertido trabajar en tantos tipos diferentes de carpintería dentro de un proyecto. Los primeros pisos del edificio son de un hotel y la parte de arriba tiene apartamentos con muchas características particulares que necesitaron diversas capacidades de carpintería para construirlas. El edificio también era muy lujoso y me gustó que se esperaba que todo fuera perfecto. Trabajé realmente duro en este edificio y estaba muy orgulloso del producto terminado.
¿Cómo cree que su herencia hispana juega un papel en su trabajo?
Nunca creí que me quedaría tanto tiempo en los Estados Unidos, pero realmente quiero mucho mi trabajo y la vida que he construido aquí. Me gusta que cuando llego a la obra, conozco personas de diferentes orígenes y ellos me conocen a mí. Sin importar de dónde vengamos, al final del día, todos trabajamos hacia el mismo objetivo como un equipo.
