Highlights from Another Successful Year at Related Midwest

Year in Review Blog.jpg

As we bid farewell to another remarkable year at Related Midwest, we reflect with immense pride on the milestones and accomplishments that have defined the past twelve months. We are proud to end the year on a high note, celebrating successful partnerships, major groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings, and our continued commitment to our community.

Opening Doors

Related Midwest was proud to cut the ribbon on several new developments this year, including The Row, the first building constructed under the Affordable Illinois legislation—with 80% market-rate and 20% affordable apartment homes. The luxury development was built in partnership with BOWA Construction, which became the first African American-owned general contractor to co-lead construction on a high-rise in Chicago.

Our work in the affordable space included unveiling the rehabilitation of Heiwa Terrace Apartments, an affordable senior community in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Related and LR Contracting acted as a turnkey developer, collaborating with Japanese American Service Committee Housing Corporation to complete the property’s first major update since its construction in 1980.

Breaking Ground

This year kicked off with a groundbreaking of Roosevelt Square Phase 3B, part of the innovative, master-planned, 160-acre development on Chicago’s Near West Side. This phase consists of three new-construction mid-rise buildings with 92 market-rate apartments, 80 CHA apartments and 50 affordable/workforce apartments. We also completed our rehab work at South Shore Apartments, an affordable community in Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood. Related invested $49 million in renovating the complex—preserving 446 affordable homes.

As we enter the New Year, we are excited to break ground on 400 Lake Shore, a Streeterville development that will reshape the skyline with two towers that offer luxury and affordable housing.

Engaging with our Community

Related Midwest takes great pride in giving back to the communities that make our work meaningful. This year, we had the privilege of hosting back-to-school events at Northpoint Apartments and Lathrop, providing essential supplies and support to ensure local students were prepared for the school year ahead. Additionally, our team organized a festive celebration for residents of South Shore Apartments, fostering a sense of warmth and community during the holiday season.

As part of our ongoing dedication to community development, LR Contracting also began construction on a new community center in collaboration with Project H.O.O.D. in West Woodlawn. This project is a testament to Related’s commitment to creating spaces that not only redefine urban living, but also contribute to the overall well-being and vitality of Chicago neighborhoods.

Our commitment to the well-being of our residents extends beyond physical structures. We also sponsor college scholarships for seniors living in one our affordable properties who plan to go on to colleges, universities and trade schools. In 2023, Kemarion Bryant—a Parkways Gardens resident—received a Related Affordable Foundation Scholarship for the second year in a row. He is using the funding to attend Northern Illinois University and major in Performing Arts.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of our journey this year, and we look forward to achieving even more as we usher in 2024.
